Immigration Intern

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

 

SCOPE OF WORK: The Immigration Intern will work closely with the IRC’s Immigration Program Specialist. The IRC’s Immigration Program provides low-cost immigration services, including filing applications for adjustment of status (i.e. green cards), naturalization, and family reunification for refugees, asylees and immigrants.  Benefits of working with the Immigration Program includes learning about refugees and new cultures, working in a diverse and multi-cultural environment, experience working at an internationally recognized non-profit organization and a first-hand look at the basics of immigration processes and procedures.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Identify immigrant communities and locales for advocacy
  • Tracking, filing and mailing relevant documents, applications and notices of action; maintain immigration databases
  • Ensure that translation services for immigration processes and procedures are provided in a language that is accessible to clients during intakes and application completions
  • Other tasks and related duties as assigned

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Learn basic policies and procedures of the USCIS and DHS.  Work directly with refugee and asylee clients, to help them navigate these requirements, file appropriate forms, complete follow-up steps, and receive immigration benefits (adjustment of status, citizenship, family reunification).

 

  1. Practice and apply basic interviewing techniques, to conduct client intakes, including methods to develop trust with clients, ensure complete disclosure, and identify “red flags” while gathering information.

 

  1. Learn practical methods to fill out USCIS immigration forms, to organize and provide supporting documents, and  to help clients write financial affidavits for fee waivers, affidavits of birth, and affidavits in response to USCIS requests for additional evidence.

 

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree
  • Prior experience in immigration a plus
  • Experience in office administration
  • Ability to learn new immigration process and educate others on that process
  • Detail- and process-oriented, ability to multi-task
  • Highly motivated, organized, and professional
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work well with a culturally diverse staff and immigration population, willingness to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of refugees
  • Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts
  • Strong computer skills required
  • Strong writing skills: ability to keep accurate, clear records / case notes
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; some knowledge of the following languages a plus but not required: Nepali, Burmese, Chin, Swahili, Farsi, Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, French

 

 

TIME COMMITMENT:

  • Summer interns are required to work at least 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer.  Interns who can intern full-time (40 hours a week) are strongly preferred.
  • Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks in the Fall and Spring
