SCOPE

The Americans for the Arts Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to investigate and participate in the operations of the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America.  Through a combination of learning experiences, work projects, and group collaborations, interns become integral members of our team.  Program benefits include career support, member services, and a series of leadership discussions with Americans for the Arts staff.  Interns are expected to participate in daily activities, contribute skills and ideas, and produce excellent work, all the while preparing to become the next generation of arts, nonprofit, and cultural leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting with events on Capitol Hill and outreach to congressional offices, both House and Senate.
  • Contacting federal agency staff to gather information on programs and writing summary briefs on federal agency grant programs
  • Reviewing publications and drafting summaries related to national policy areas in education, tax, arts and culture, economic development, international cultural exchange and the arts and health.
  • Assisting with state-level legislation tracking and review
  • Attend and report on congressional committee hearings, and other national policy forums around Washington, DC, as needed

Additional projects may include:

  • Contacting state and local arts leaders regarding advocacy activities
  • Clerical tasks, as needed
  • Other projects and assignments given by the Chief Counsel of Government and Public Affairs or Senior Director of Federal Affairs

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and organization skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office products and interest in learning advocacy outreach applications
  • Ability to communicate with staff in a professional and courteous manner
