Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for a comprehensive major gifts program, to include identifying, cultivating, and soliciting emerging capital and major gift donors ($25,000 and above) with an annual expectation of personal visits with prospects/donors and gift income productivity.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Manage a portfolio of 100-150 capital and major gift prospects to assess ability, cultivate relationships, solicit gifts, and provide excellent stewardship. Raise gifts to fund University capital projects and programs and enhance the development efforts of Adelphi’s schools and departments.
2. Conduct a minimum of 15 visits/meetings per month with suspects and/or prospects.
3. Devise, recommend, and execute cultivation and solicitation strategies for a select group of donors and prospects. On behalf of the President and Vice President, write and present proposals appropriate to prospect's interest and financial situation.
4. Obtain a basic knowledge of planned giving and discuss these opportunities with prospective donors, using the assistance, if necessary, of other members of the staff.
5. Participate in regular prospect screening sessions with key University volunteers and staff members. Initiate contact with prospective donors; reengage lapsed major donors; and devise strategies to redirect their interests.
6. Work proactively and in tandem with other development staff, university leadership, and volunteer teams to integrate major giving strategies into their overall annual and long-range goals.
7. Effectively utilize the time, talents, and energy of volunteers through training and guidance that will ensure effective fund raising activities.
8. Plan and implement marketing strategies and marketing campaigns for capital and major gift donor recognition.
9. Provide donors and their advisors with gift impact calculations, analyses, and illustrations.
10. Assist the Vice President with special projects, as requested.
11. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Demonstrated interest in and ability to represent Adelphi University in one-on-one visits with key constituents (donors; prospects).
2. Knowledge of IRS charitable contribution laws, regulations, and procedures in the acceptance of all types of gifts.
3. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and efficiently and to demonstrate productivity through activity reports.
4. Ability to listen to donors and respect their intentions and motivations in making major gifts to Adelphi University.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
6. Excellent writing skills.
7. Ability to be organized and pay attention to detail.
8. Strong knowledge of fund raising activities, including the attraction of major gifts.
9. Strong computer skills for using Microsoft Word, Excel and GroupWise.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) and a minimum of 6 years job-related experience, at least 4 years involving the solicitation of capital and major gifts. Experience with a capital campaign in a higher education environment preferred. |
