Facilities Maintenance Engineer

Description

This position is focused on the facilities maintenance support of a large data center facility. Duties will be split between the Culpeper, VA data center and data centers in DC and MD.  

The candidate will be required to courier equipment and staff between Downtown DC and Culpeper VA as much as 3 times a week via a government provided vehicle. The candidate will also be responsible keeping the Culpeper data center clean and in showcase condition.  The position requires light manual labor which shipments are received at the loading dock. 

The qualified candidate will have the technical ability to evaluate, process, troubleshoot, install/repair and otherwise fulfill service requests including electrical, telecom including fiber/copper cabling, and other misc. facility support duties. (This position is not an electrician position as electrical design, cabling or connections other than standard plug-ins will not be required. The position’s electrical duties do however require the knowledge of electrical theory, wiring and components such as PDU’s, UPS’, etc.) 

The qualified candidate will interface with Enterprise Server Operations Centers (ESOC) staff, other Department of State facilities personnel, as well as varying contractors to perform these tasks.

The candidates will be interviewed by a combination of the ESOC Management personnel.  Candidates will be evaluated based on:

 Technical background and ability

  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to interact with technical and non-technical personnel
  • Valid driver’s license with no driving related convictions  

The ideal candidate will have a technical background in data center facilities management, as well as peripheral IT knowledge; government experience in the same would be extremely valuable but is not necessary.  Candidate must also have the ability to drive and operate various types of motor vehicles, i.e., SUV, mini vans, etc.,

Primary:

·   Valid driver’s license

·   Technical background including varying degrees of telecommunication and power (electrical) services and equipment

·   Telecom wiring installation and maintenance including CAT 5/6, etc.

·   Customer service/support background

Secondary:

·   Mechanical fiber cable creation/splicing

·   Power tool abilities such as saws, screwdrivers, etc.

·   Basic hand tool abilities

·   Various test equipment and troubleshooting skills

 

Secret Required

Primary:

·         Evaluation, fulfillment and/or processing of installation and maintenance activities including power, telecommunication, powered doors and other security devices, cabling/wiring, associated documentation and other misc. facility maintenance tasks as assigned

·         Interfacing/escorting with various contractors, tradesmen and other personnel throughout the data centers as the facility technical POC

·         Monitoring and responding to data center facility (technical) alarms

·         Receiving, unloading, and staging various pieces of IT equipment

·         Cleaning the data center

·         Courier and driving between Culpeper, VA and various sites in the DC area

·         Security awareness

·         Flexibility! 

Secondary (required on an occasional basis):

·         On-site contact for infrastructure testing (generator, PDU, other) and may require weekend/off-hour duty

·         Duty coverage in multiple facility locations in Wash. DC and Maryland assisting other co-workers

·         Supporting special projects including planned outages, facility upgrades, etc.

·         Misc. facility support including occasional moving of furniture, floor tile cutting, plasma screen TV installation, and other tasks as-needed

·         Position requires occasional lifting of light equipment and other moderate physical activity.
