The Director of New Product Incubation, Corporate Research and Technology, drives and directs the efforts/initiatives and teams to mate an externally acquired ideas or technologies with unmet customer needs to create innovations. The incubation process will also include the creation of a Risk Adjusted Net Present Value for each innovation and finally, based on the attractiveness of this Risk Aadjusted NPV, further assessment work is accomplished to refine the technology to a point where the innovations are ready for execution level product development initiation. The incumbent will lead multiple interdisciplinary incubation projects simultaneously. This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

· Through strong and consistent leadership, the incumbent will create cross-functional teams blending Corporate Research and Technology personnel with assigned resources from the various business units to perform the New Product Incubation activities.

· The incumbent will own the New Product Incubation Process and will continually assess and improve it.

· The incumbent will become an expert and a trainer in Outcome Driven Innovation concepts that will ensure the complete understanding of unmet customer needs and will train and work with cross functional teams to ascertain these needs as part of the innovation incubation process.

· The Director of New Product Incubation will also support Technology Scanning activities and will work the CTO, the Director of Research and Technology, and the Director of New Business development in the identification and acquisition of new technologies.

· This position is also responsible for working with Business Unit R/D and Marketing directors to conceive product designs and develop plans of development/implementation that compliments the AMS strategic goals and priorities for the new project/product s which ensure successful attainment of project/product goals within the context of the overall R&D strategy.

· Is responsible for incubation of innovations leading to initiation of the development of these innovations into new products. This entails mating technologies/ideas with unmet customer needs to create innovations, verifying the value proposition of the innovations and performing early technology development to prepare innovations for the product development process

· Co-Owner of the Technology Scanning process identifying new technologies and ideas to drive into the incubation process

· Establishes and leads cross-functional project teams in the mating of technologies/ideas with unmet customer needs to create innovations.

· Leads and owns the innovation incubation process leading to introduction of new products into the product development pipeline of new products

· Forms and leads cross-functional teams in the incubation of new innovations.

· Interfaces with all customer segments including key physicians, payers and patients on identification of unmet user needs and expectations leading to the development and validation of new product features

· Understands and complies with ISO/GMP/QSP requirements.

EDUCATION

· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent; Masters Degree in Engineering highly desired. MBA/Masters in Technology Management desirable

EXPERIENCE

· Must have played a key role in the design/development and launch of successful medical devices into the marketplace

· Organizational depth and diversity of experience with a demonstrated success in new product realization in medical devices area

· Minimum 15 years engineer experience in the medical device industry

· Experience in corporate incubator or VC-backed incubator highly desirable

SKILLS

· Proven analytical and problem solving skills

· Self-initiator in relation to project and/or project teams, with demonstrated history of proven performance in achieving success through a team

· Extensive verbal and written communication skills
