Basic Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge with 3 years of related professional experience. Knowledge of scientific, technical, or policy issues in atmospheric and climate sciences. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. Demonstrated proficiency in conveying scientific/technical/policy information in oral and written form is desirable. Master's degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge with 1-2 years of related professional experience is desired. Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to weather, climate, or other atmospheric science areas, or the interfaces of these areas with policy is highly desired.

Description

The Division on Earth and Life Studies (DELS) consists of twelve units that facilitate communication among the research community, policy makers, industry, interest groups, and the public. DELS is responsible for a vast array of topics, ranging from the molecular level to the global level. The common thread linking the units is the broad topic of science and the environment, but the division also examines issues outside that area.

 

The Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) seeks to advance understanding of the Earth's atmosphere and climate, to help apply this knowledge to benefit the public, and to advise the federal government on issues within the Board's areas of expertise. The Board carries out its mission through the activities of specialized committees and panels charged with providing cogent and independent advice on critical scientific issues, from narrowly defined, highly technical problems to broad public policy concerns.

 

The Associate Program Officer, under the guidance of a Board Director or Program Officer:

·   Develops and manages programs/project activities of moderate complexity.

·   With input from senior staff, coordinates and administers all aspects of the Academies study committee process, including committee nominations, committee meetings and workshops, report preparation and report review, and dissemination activities.

·   Communicates and coordinates with committee members and external contacts and provides support to committee in all aspects of its work.

·   Facilitates the flow of information among committee members, consultants, sponsors, and staff.

·   Develops agendas, invites presenters and participants, oversees meeting logistics, and prepares written summaries.

·   Identifies and gathers research materials for the committee.

·   Synthesizes and edits research findings and technical data and determines relevance of data to study.

·   Prepares background papers and technical summaries.

·   Provides support to committees in all aspects of report writing.

·   Edits report and facilitates response to review.

·   Oversees report publication.

·   Under general guidance from an experienced responsible staff officer, oversees project budgets and schedules.

·   Prepares various reports on program/project activities.

·   Also may represent the program/project within and outside the National Academies.

·   Assigns tasks and provides guidance and feedback to staff.

·   Assists senior staff in the development of programs and projects and in raising funds for new activities.
