Organizer/Field Representative

 We represent 95,000 California state employees in nine different bargaining units. We negotiate and enforce a complex contract that ensures good working conditions, fair wages and secure health care and retirement benefits.

SEIU Local 1000, a progressive public sector labor union is seeking Organizers and Field Representatives who live and breathe worksite organizing. If you’re passionate about organizing, a tireless advocate for the rank-and-file, and excel at both strategy and tactics of influencing others towards collective action, please apply. The ideal candidate will want to become a dedicated union organizer, be creative in identifying leaders, mobilizing volunteers, and want to become an expert at running campaigns.  

This position is open in Sacramento and may be considered for other locations.  Additional locations include: Fresno, Rancho Cucamonga, Los Angeles and Oakland. 
 

Job Duties

  • Implement worksite campaigns aimed at internal organizing.
  • Plan and execute member actions and mobilization.
  • Recruit, identify and develop worksite leaders and stewards.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication networks in worksites.
  • Organize rallies, distribute leaflets, notices and other materials to worksite leaders, stewards and members.
  • Create and maintain lists, charts and database

Qualifications

  • 2 years experience to qualify as a Field Representative
  • Organizers-in Training may be hired without prior experience.   Prior experience as a steward is a plus.
  • Leadership and motivational skills.
  • Effective written, verbal and listening skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and service workers.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and database management.
  • Experience working with tight timelines under pressure and minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours.
  • Occasional overnight travel required.
  • Valid driver's license, car and insurance.
  • Commitment to social justice and building power for workers.
  • College degree preferred.
