Description
The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI, www.epri.com) conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public. An independent, nonprofit organization, EPRI brings together its scientists and engineers as well as experts from academia and industry to help address challenges in electricity, including reliability, efficiency, health, safety and the environment.
 
Technical Executive – Power Delivery & Utilization (Knoxville, TN, Charlotte, NC or Palo Alto, CA)
 
Grid operations and planning research is focused on improving real-time situation awareness, wide area protection and control performance and the capability to handle extreme events and restore the system using a variety of methods and tools.  This position will put the candidate at the front lines with the ISOs, NERC, FERC, utilities and vendors to develop the integration protocols and smart grid fuctionality to provide reliable power and make a low carbon future a reality.
 
 
Job Functions:
  • Support Technology development in the emerging issues facing grid operations and planning including:
    • Operations and planning for the Smart Grid
    • Effective utilization of PMU's
    • Incorporating efficiency into transmission planning and operation
    • New NERC planning standards
    • Markets and ancillary services
    • Training of new and existing industry staff
  • Support ElectriNet, IntelliGrid, and smart grid demo
  • Support the development of detailed technology plans for grid operations and planning
  • Engage external stakeholders to support execution of the plan
  • Perform select technology development
  • Review and direct development to ensure effective schedule, scope, and budget

Ideal Candidate

  • Has a strong technical background.
  • Possesses industry experience, especially with ISO or NERC.
  • Has IT experience.
  • Able to speak well and communicate effectively. Well spoken
Education Level and Years of Experience:   
  • PhD in related technical or scientific field is generally required.
  • Recognized as having world-class, expert knowledge in a broad field of expertise by the science, engineering or technical community both within and outside EPRI.
  • Experience in performing applied research activities.
EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
